First Church Activities


Heart’s Willing Club welcomes all women to work together on projects benefiting the church; meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of each month.

Prayer Shawl Ministry gathers for knitting and crocheting on alternate Thursday evenings. Shawls are blessed and then delivered to those in need of comfort.

“For the Beauty of the Earth” Gardening Group tends the ornamental gardens and meets occasionally after worship to plan projects.

The Arts: Musical, Visual and Theatrical

Adult Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:30 pm.

Junior and Youth Choirs practice on Sunday mornings following the worship.

Growing in Faith

Vacation Bible School is held one week during the summer; children learn about their faith using Bible stories, games, crafts, and songs.

Bible studies and book discussions occur at various times. Current offerings are described in the newsletter, The Messenger.

Outreach Ministries

Loaves and Fishes is a soup kitchen located in Springfield. First Church helpers prepare, deliver, and serve the evening meal on the second Monday of each month.

Open Pantry distributes food locally. On the third Sunday of each month nonperishable foods are collected in baskets located in the Narthex.

CROP Walk occurs annually; sponsored walkers raise funds to help relieve hunger.

Boards and Committees

A collection of Boards and Committees, comprised of covenant members who are elected annually, work together to guide the workings of the Church. A brief description of each is given below.

  • The Board of Deacons assists the Minister in the spiritual affairs of the Church. details

  • The Board of Trustees manages the business and the material affairs of the Church. details

  • The Stewardship Committee conducts the annual pledge campaign for the Church and works with the Church Council to prepare an annual budget. details

  • The Music Committee works with the Director of Music and the Minister is planning music for services. details

  • The Christian Education Committee promotes a year-round program of Christian education for all ages. details

  • The Outreach Committee keeps members informed concerning the wider outreach of the Church and stimulates financial support. details

  • The Nominating Committee draws up a slate of persons to be elected at the Annual Meeting and make nominations for vacancies. details

  • The Delegates represent the Church at gatherings of the Massachusetts Conference of the UCC and the Hampden Association of the MACUCC. details
